Let's see what historical dictionaries say:<\/p>\n<p>Neither <i>splish<\/i> nor <i>splish-splash<\/i> appear in Johnson's dictionary (1755), <i>The Century Dictionary<\/i> (1889-1891), or <i>The New Century Dictionary<\/i> (1940).  In those, one can only <i>splash<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1st edition of the <i>Oxford English Dictionary<\/i> (1888-1928), <i>splish-splash<\/i> (and its derived form <i>splishy-splashy<\/i>) is present as a hyphenated, inseparable unit (volume 9\/1, p. 645):<\/p>\n<p class=\"indented-quoted-stuff\"><b>Splish-splash<\/b>, <i>v. rare.<\/i> [f. <span style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">Splash<\/span> <i>v.<\/i><sup>1<\/sup>, with usual variation of vowel.] <i>intr.<\/i> To splash repeatedly.<br \/><span class=\"small-quoted-stuff\"><b>1720<\/b> <span style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">Swift<\/span> <i>Irish Feast<\/i> 44 The Floor is all wet...
